The Difference Between a Topcoat and a Varnish

logo

The difference between a topcoat and a varnish

While not all manufacturers follow the same terminology with regard to topcoats and varnishes, GOLDEN has made a conscious effort to keep the difference clear.

Topcoats are non-removable products, intended for use as a top layer or as the layer applied just before a varnish is applied.

Varnishes are removable products, intended as a sacrificial layer to ensure that the work can be cleaned and restored after years of exposure to the hazards of normal environmental conditions.
